Private Photo Sessions
|| Questions & Answers ||

General Questions:

Who selects the final images?

The artist chooses the best images from the photo shoot. There are a few reasons why it’s done this way. Unlike a common portrait studio approach, the images are the result of the artist’s creative intent and vision. He is the only one who can select the images that are consistent with that. Also, the artist enhances and uses custom techniques that are added to the image while printing in the darkroom or producing an image transfer. None of these techniques will be seen in a proof sheet or digital file.

Are the images retouched?

No. Generally, the artist prefers to capture the true person. And body flaws are all part of the person and what makes them unique. It’s honest. The artist will discuss any concerns regarding scars and body imperfections before hand. If it’s determined that retouching is needed then it can be done.

What size are the final images?

The final images are printed on 11” x 14” paper, but the actual image size is usually smaller and centered within the paper size. Leaving an amount of clean paper around the image itself enhances the image. The final size of the image within the paper size depends on the specific image and the process used. The artist determines the most dramatic size to print the image.

Can I get (or purchase) a copy of the negatives or hi-res digital files?

All of the original film negatives or transparencies are the property of the artist. All original digital files are the property of the artist. The session fee does include a set of hi-resolution digital scans made from the final print (at 300dpi) to the same size as the original print. Clients will also receive a set of scans at 72 dpi for web use.

Who owns the image files and the copyrights?

The artist/photographer always retains ownership of all images as well as the copyrights to those images.

Who provides wardrobe and props?

The clients need to supply or purchase their own wardrobe and props. While the artist has a large selection, any personal or specific items must be supplied or purchased by the client. However, the artist works closely with the client to help with selection, coordination and purchase of outfits, accessories and props. In addition, if needed, a professional wardrobe stylist can be hired to work with the artist and client, especially when complex sets are needed.

Who provides the location?

The artist will work closely with the client to determine the most appropriate location for a photo session. He will scout and find any needed location. In addition, if a complex or unusual location is needed a professional location service can be hired to work with the artist and client to find the exact location desired. The client is responsible for all costs for locations and any related fees and permits.

Do you only shoot nudes?

No. However that is the artists specialty and is the genre where he is best known. Nudity is not an expectation or requirement and is something that should be discussed with the artist when considering a photo session. Every client must be comfortable with the subject matter of the shoot. It is strictly up to each person to set their own comfort level in this matter, and the artist always respects that.

Do you work with regular everyday people who aren’t as attractive as your other models?

Most of the people that the artist shoots are non-professional models, and the majority of them are regular everyday people, over 30 years old. Some are into their mid 50s.

What use does the artist/photographer make of the images from the photo session?

The artist will use digital files of the images on his website as part of his portfolio and in other ways to promote his work. He may include prints of the work in selected gallery and museum exhibitions as well as publications. He will never sell the images for commercial purposes, but only to use to exhibit his work.

Does a client have to sign a release?

Yes, the signing of a model release is required to document that the model granted permission for their likeness to be photographed (a requirement under the privacy statutes). It also allows the photographer the right to show the images on his website and/or exhibit the images in galleries and museums.

In addition to a session release, the photographer must make a photocopy of the model’s driver’s license or passport. This provides documentation as required under 18 U.S.C. 2257, and is kept secured and on file by the photographer.

Can a photo session be for one person alone rather than for a couple?

Individual sessions are available. This is a common request and an opportunity to create imagery for a unique, one of a kind, gift.

Can two couples share a photo session?

Absolutely, two couples or even larger groups can be in one session. This is often an opportunity to increase the sensual experience and share the costs of the photo session. If two couples share a session, there are charges to cover additional make-up costs for both couples.

Session Booking Questions:

How long in advance should a photo session be booked?

This depends on the artist’s schedule and availability. It also depends on the complexity of the session, availability of locations, etc. Contact the artist to determine what is needed and schedule a session. Generally a session should have at least a 4 week lead time.

What are the travel costs if you do a session in another town?

With travel sessions there are a number of expenses, such as airfares, hotel rates and local travel expenses, that vary widely based on the location and the time of the year. If a client is interested in a session that involves travel, the artist will prepare an estimate of anticipated expenses. Alternately, if a client has a specific request and destination we can prepare a specific quotation.

What session lengths are available?

Generally, the artist works in half-day or full-day sessions. Other photo sessions can be arranged upon request.

What do I need to do in order to confirm my appointment?

Set up a definate photo date with the artist first. Then send in the deposit to reserve and confirm the session. Photo sessions are only confirmed after receipt of deposit.

Are deposits refundable?

Deposits are fully refundable up to 10 days prior a scheduled photo session, providing no expenses have been incurred in preparation for the session. If a photo session is cancelled with less than 10 days notice, the deposit can be applied towards another booking within 30 days from the original booking date.  If a session is not rescheduled within the 30-day period, then the deposit will be forfeited.  If the artist must cancels a booking for any reason at any time, the client’s full deposit will be refunded.

How can I pay for the deposit?

PayPal to the artists account.

Through a bank direct wire transfer.
Western Union or MoneyGram service.

At the Photo Session:

Who determines which garments and props are used during the session?

Prior to any photo session, and by consulting with the client, the photographer will have worked out the images to be accomplished during the photo shoot. From that, the wardrobe and props that best enhance the image will be determined. The photographer will work with the client to bring any necessary outfits and props to the session. At the session, the photographer will work with the client to select which garments are most appropriate for each image.

Who will be present at the photo session in addition to the photographer?

At the photo session, besides the artist and the models, there will always be a female makeup artist and occasionally a photo assistant. In the room where the photography is being taken, generally only the artist and models will be there.

Can my spouse, friend or partner come to the photo session?

The artist prefers not having additional people around during the actual photo shoot. It can be distracting for the photographer and for the model. Occasionally, if the model(s) needs support, or to have someone to react to, visitors may be allowed on set. It is not something we normally allow, and should be discussed with the artist prior to the photo session.

We prefer clients don’t show up at the photo shoot with a collection of friends who are there to watch. Unnecessary people can slow down the shoot, be distracting and damage equipment and property inadvertently.

Can you do my photo shoot without using a makeup artist/hair stylist?

This can be discussed with the artist prior to the photo shoot. Generally, a professional makeup artist and hair stylist is a valuable asset on a photo shoot. They can concentrate on that part of creating the image and be on hand to make any touch ups required, so that the models need not be concerned or distracted by that aspect of the shoot. In most cases, it is strongly recommended that a make up artist be used. Also the makeup artists that D. Keith employs are (unlike many photographers, not his wife or girlfriend) full-time experienced makeup artists who he has worked with many times.

I am nervous about posing, what can I do to relax?

The artist is extremely good at making clients feel comfortable and at ease. Share any of your concerns with the artist prior to your shoot session, that will allow him to help find ways to help you relax and feel more comfortable. You could also bring some of your own music CDs. You may also bring wine or spirits, if you find it relaxing. But keep in mind, the artist will not photograph anyone who is impaired, and he does not allow drugs on the premises during a session.
